I've never met a craft
I didn't like.

I have been a crafter my whole life. Craft, to me, means practice, something you come back to, get better at, push further. Most crafts disappear into a long invisible middle, but not chainstitch. It reveals itself stitch by stitch, in minutes. It doesn't want to stay in a studio. It wants an audience.

The chainstitch machine was built for function, mechanics' uniforms, workwear, the kinds of things that needed to be made fast and made the same. I was drawn to the idea of taking something built for repetition and using it for the opposite, for the one-off, the specific, the thing that couldn't have been made for anyone else. The stitch it produces is textural and hand-guided. Every stitch is made individually, and you can see that in the finished piece.
